My name is Jay Young and this is my weblog about computing and technology topics and Life as a University System Manager.

I am a Senior Information Systems Technologist in the Cooperative Extension division of the NC State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. My position is currently funded via a grant from the National eXtension Initiative where I am the Systems Manager in the Information Technology group of eXtension. We are in the process of building a national repository of information aggregated from sources throughout the land-grant system. My role, as one of my former colleagues has remarked, is to do “stuff”. My stuff mostly consists of information architecture, Linux and Macintosh system administration, and web software development (mostly Ruby/Rails).

I am a graduate of NC State, I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, with a research interest in Operating Systems and Information Architecture.

Along the way to the role with eXtension, I’ve worn many different computing hats, including desktop support for a building full of Macs (including an early transition from MacOS System 6 to a then novel operating system known as “System 7″); Windows NT and NetWare consulting for a reseller (where I picked up and let expire MCSE and CNE certifications); Unix desktop support, Win32 programming, Windows integration for academic labs at NC State, and just under 5 great years as the Systems Group Manager for the ITECS division of the College of Engineering at NC State University.

In 1999, I received the University Award for Excellence and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation for my Windows integration work.

Outside of work, I enjoy road trips and spending time with my wife, reading, and photography.
